America Settentrionale [Western Sheet].

America Settentrionale [Western Sheet].

Venice, from the Atlante Veneto, [1693].

Original engraved map (plate mark c.463 x c.620 mm, sheet c.493 x c.712 mm), uncolored. Small (50mm) split to left side of center horizontal crease, verso of full crease reinforced. Evenly toned with some browning and foxing in the margins, light stain to bottom margin outside of the plate mark, a strong impression; very good.

§ The Western side only of Coronelli's double-page map of North America depicting the Pacific coast with California as an island, the Southwest, and east into the Gulf of Mexico, part of the first volume of the "Atlante Veneto," a comprehensive atlas published between 1690 and 1701. One of the most influential maps from the earliest years of exploration and colonization of the continent and rich with both factual and speculative cartography, including the Mississippi placed west of the great lakes, and an early use of the name Chicago (Chekagou) referring to the Chicago River. The Western side of the map includes the splendid title cartouche with allegorical figures, and a smaller garlanded cartouche with notes on the discovery of California. There are several small vignettes of indigenous Americans, including one cooking a human leg, and another being eaten by an alligator. Item #127118
