Prayers Written at Vailima.
London: Chatto & Windus, 1910.
4to, (24) chromolithographed pages, many heightened with gold. Contemporary gift binding of green morocco panelled with blind and gilt rolls, gilt turn-ins, green floral endpapers. Boards professionally rehinged, one corner worn, light age-toning. Very good.
§ Second impression. Designed, written out, and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski. Villa Vailima on the island of Upolu in Samoa was the final home of Robert Louis Stevenson and the place of his death in 1894. Fanny Stevenson explains in the introduction that these prayers were written by her husband for the household's regular evening devotions in the last months of his life. The prayers were first published in 1904. This edition, wholly calligraphed and illuminated by the master calligrapher Alberto Sangorski, is an impressive example of chromolithography and a beautiful gift book. Item #126949
