Forbes was unable to clear up the confusion concerning the date of the work which is 1827 according to the title page but after 1828 according to a printed notice facing the title page: "This discussion was originally printed in the North American Review, No. LVIII, for January 1828, Art.III p.59. In this impression a few additional passages have been inserted, for the purpose of treating some topics more fully than the limits of an article in the Review would admit." Item #126361
