Poems by Mrs Opie.
London: Printed for T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1803.
12mo, iv, 185, (3, ads) pp. Engraved frontispiece. Old worn calf, recently rebacked with endpapers renewed, preserving original boards. Clipped bookplate of Oliver H Perry on front pastedown and his signature in two other places; old manuscript note and stamp of E. Vinton on front blank. Frontis and title page browned, scattered foxing and staining; good.
§ Second edition of Amelia Opie's collection of spiritual and reformist poems, which ran to six editions. Opie (neé Anderson, 1769-1853) was a well-connected Bluestocking, an ardent abolitionist, and a widely published poet and novelist. The careful preservation of the bookplate suggests this copy may have belonged to Oliver Hazard Perry, the American naval commander and hero of the Battle of Lake Eerie, however the two ownership inscriptions in the book seem quite different to other recorded examples of his signature.
