§ Second and best edition. A man whose interests ranged from numismatics to gardening -- he was also the author of the aboriculture classic Sylva, 1664 -- Evelyn (1620-1706) was educated at Balliol, Oxford, held a number of offices under Charles II, and was a founding member and secretary of The Royal Society.
