The Woman of Andros.
New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1930.
8vo., [1]-162 pp., title-page printed in black and orange. Original full gray cloth lettered in gilt, with vignette figure of a seated woman stamped in red to the upper board, original gray dust jacket printed in red, top edge red. Dust jacket has some minor chips at edges, faint damp stain to both jacket and corresponding parts of the cloth, otherwise internally a very good copy with gift inscription by the author to the title-page.
§ First edition, inscribed “For Doris Flagg, with the regard of Thorton Wilder. Chicago, December 1934.” The Woman of Andros, set in ancient Greece, received mixed reviews in its time, confusing critics who wondered why Wilder was not writing in response to his own time, but proving popular with readers who ensured it was one of the best-selling books of 1930.
