§ A leaf from the original printing of this issue of Harper’s Weekly. The two page illustration depicts grisly scenes from Andersonville Prison, a confederate prison camp from the Civil War era. The plate is crowned by a portrait of Captain Hartmann Heinrich "Henry" Wirz who took charge in late March 1864, his failures in command made him the target of resentment and hostility among prisoners. Wirz was sentenced to death for war crimes shortly after this edition of Harper’s Weekly was published. Item #108157
