§ First edition, first issue. John Hay (1838-1905) was the 37th Secretary of State and served in Lincoln’s cabinet during the Civil War. This was John Hay’s first book, a narrative poem about a steamboat tragedy and another about the miraculous rescue of a pioneer child lost in a snowstorm.
