The Bay and Padie Book. Kiddie Songs. Illustrations by Vera Hamilton and Cyril Dobbs.

Melbourne (Australia): Sydney J. Endacott, 1917. Slim 4to, [34]pp. printed throughout in blue and black, with illustrations in the text. Original gray-green boards, white printed pictorial label on upper cover. An excellent copy of a very fragile book. Second edition, printed in 1918 (so stated on verso of title), of this rare and fragile Australian children’s book. Enormously popular, it was reprinted several times between 1926 and 1950 but the first and second editions, issued privately by the Galleon Press for Endacott, are very hard to find especially in anything like acceptable condition. No copy of any edition before 1926 on COPAC; OCLC only records the UCLA and Queensland copies but the National Library of Australia has the first and second editions. ICDL states: “Thirty-one rhymes provide glimpses into the real and imagined world of two small boys, Bay, aged three, and Padie, aged four, and their companions Sufi the persian kitten and Micky the whisper fairy.” (Item Id: 6418)
