Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1838. Two volumes. 8vo, original blindstamped navy-blue cloth, backstrips gilt-lettered. iv, 319; vii, 369 pp. Scattered foxing; a very good set, with fresh & bright bindings on both volumes. First Edition. With chapters on London, Paris, the French and Italian Opera houses, and "second-rate restaurants." The author (1808-1853) was an attorney and scholar of Vermont extraction. Each volume in this set is neatly signed on the front pastedown by "George F. Houghton." This is undoubtedly George Frederick Houghton (1820-1870), a Vermont attorney, editor, and historian who founded the Vermont Historical Society and was president of it until his death. In an article on the history of Burlington, Vermont, published in the Vermont Historical Magazine of October, 1867, Houghton included a two-page eulogy on Jewett in which he described the present work as "widely read and highly commented." Smith, American Travellers Abroad J23. (Item Id: 5894)
