Louis Rhead (1857-1926) was a British artist who came to America in 1883 at the invitation of Appleton Publishing Company. "He quickly established a reputation as a designer of book covers, and was one of the first artists to design posters for the holiday issues of periodicals, a practice that led directly to the poster craze of the 1890's."
