A.L.S. to the wife of a man killed in a skirmish with Native Americans.
Mariposa Alta California June 17, 1850. 4to, three-page letter written in ink, folded, stamped in red San Francisco July 1 40. In fine condition. This exceptionally interesting letter is from James Shephard Jn. to Mrs. Samuel H. Smith, 148 Hammond Street, New York, breaking the news that her husband has died due to a wound in the leg from an Indian attack that left an arrowhead sunk into an artery. Although the leg was amputated he died soon thereafter, despite being attended by five doctors (one of whom seems to also have been wounded in the attack). Shephard assures the widow that his financial affairs will be handled properly and offers lengthy condolences.
