Bernard Shaw and Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Their Correspondence.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1952. 8vo, xvii, 385, xiii, (i, colophon) pp. Quarter black cloth, green cloth boards, gilt stamped with titled and decorations. Gilt a little faded, board tips bumped, clean within but for marks left by a paperclip as page marker and one instance of underlining, small bookseller ticket of Paul Elder, San Francisco, on rear paste down. No dust-jacket. Very good. The legendary letters between the actress "Mrs Pat", born Beatrice Tanner, and G.B. Shaw. A love affair conducted entirely by post. Shaw wrote the part of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion expressly for her. As the preface begins: "Here are the letters exchanged - between 1899 and 1939 - by an intellectual giant and a great and beautiful actress, a pair whose brilliance of mind and of personality dominated the English-speaking stage for fifty years".
