Washington: Franklin Knight, 1844. Folio, half-title, 8pp. of facsimile letters, t/p with facing portrait of Washington, 3 plates and 98 of 100 pp. Foxed and worn, in the original rather worn dark blue leather binding stamped in gilt on both covers. Henry Clay’s signature in pencil at the front (rather faint). Ex-Jay Fliegelman’s copy. Fliegelman was renowned for his collection of association copies of Americana and as he acquired better examples he sold off copies. This example went to Thomas about 15 years ago. The book is in poor condition and imperfect, of interest only for the faint pencil signature at the front. Clay was Secretary of State and known as the “great compromiser”: “Clay brokered important agreements during the Nullification Crisis and on the slavery issue. As part of the "Great Triumvirate" or "Immortal Trio," along with his colleagues Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, he was instrumental in formulating the Missouri Compromise of 1820, the Compromise Tariff of 1833, and the Compromise of 1850 to ease sectional tensions. He was viewed as the primary representative of Western interests in this group, and was nicknamed "Harry of the West" and "The Western Star." (Wikipedia). (Item Id: 110653)
