[London: White, 1781]. Slim 4to, 7pp. text and 10 plates (one folding). Cleaned and recently bound in half speckled calf, red morocco label, green boards, by Dusel. The extra plates that go with the first edition of Pennant’s Tours of Wales, usually cited as Pennant’s best book. “Pennant's topographical and geographical works were admired by many of his contemporaries, including Samuel Johnson, who praised him as "the best traveller I ever read”... After several successful publications, including A Tour in Scotland in 1769 (1771) and A Tour in Scotland and Voyage to the Hebrides (1774 etc.), Pennant set out on horseback to explore districts in Wales and its highest mountain, Snowdon. The first volume of Tour in Wales was published in 1778 but covered a limited area of the country in North Wales. In an attempt to remedy this, Pennant soon issued his Journey to Snowdon (part one in 1781 and part two in 1783), and these later jointly became the second volume of his Tour... According to Lowndes and Powell, the original drawings in both parts of Pennant's Welsh tour were chiefly by Moses Griffiths (1749-1819), artist and engraver and Pennant's frequent companion on his British tours.” The preface to this volume states: “These plates [are] the first efforts of Moses Griffith in the art of etching...” (Item Id: 110632)
