Original pictorial green cloth wraparound design of Stanley in the boat “The Lady Alice” pushing through jungle. Considerably worn, boards rubbed, binding attached by threads to vol. 1 and joints cracked in vol. 2, closed tear in vol.1 pg 61/62, list of names on front free endpaper, author’s name written on title page of vol. 1, not in his hand. Large folding maps with numerous splits along the folds but complete. First US edition of Stanley’s account of his explorations in equatorial Africa, funded by the Daily Telegraph in England and the New York Herald. The expedition was planned to continue the efforts of Livingstone to discover the source of the Nile and succeeded in confirming the connection between the Lualaba and Congo Rivers. The experience and reputation Stanley gained on this expedition led to his subsequent employment as agent to King Leopold II of Belgium and his role in claiming Congo for Belgium. (Item Id: 110525)
