Leipzig: Arthur P. Schmidt, 1905 / 1907. 4to, 2 volumes in one. 35pp; 35pp. Printed music with Lear’s illustrations and verses. Full red cloth over beveled boards, gilt and black stamped, with patterned endpapers. A fine copy. First editions. Schmidt 105 and 124. Edward Lear (1812-1888) “was employed as drawing-master to the children of the Earl of Derby at Knowsley, where he painted and drew and wrote The Book of Nonsense for the Earl’s children. The Book of Nonsense is thought by Lear’s critics to be the first stage in his development as a comic writer. The limericks are essentially happy and inconsequential, but every now and again revealing more sinister undertones. . . . In a moment of financial desperation, Lear sold the rights of the The Book of Nonsense to Routledge in 1861 for £125, and lived to see it reissued again and again during his lifetime.” Houfe 366. (Item Id: 11052)
