Welty was much honored in her lifetime for her stories of the American South. In 1973 she won a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Optimist's Daughter. Delta Wedding was one of her earliest full-length novels. A contemporary reviewer described her as "a new talent, sparkling and deep, combining the sensibility of Virginia Woolf's moody brilliance with an uncommon sense of the American realistic tradition".
