Adventures in American Bookshops, Antique Stores and Auction Rooms.

Detroit: The Douglas Book Shop, 1922. Sm. 8vo, 125, (3, index)pp. Original unlettered plain brown ribbed cloth. Upper hinge loose but holding, very good. First edition a fascinating account of the author’s favorite (and not so favorite) book shops, mainly in New York but also Chicago, Detroit, Boston, and even a small mention of San Francisco. He also waxes eloquent on dealers of all kinds from runners of books to rug and painting speculators who paid pennies and sold for thousands. This palpable excitement must have inspired collectors and dealers at the time and is an early if not the first book on the excitement of the chase that Van Allen Bradley and others continued from the 1930s up to today. A scarce book in good condition, limited to 1000 copies and this copy inscribed by Bruno slightly enigmatically: “In memory of (drawing of a heart). For Harry F. Greene from his fellow sufferer Guido Bruno NY May 5th 1930.” The dust-jacket (not present) is titled “Booksellers I have met”. (Item Id: 109281)
