London: Macmillan and Son, 1863. 2 vols, 8vo, xv, 389; vii, 268 pp., with a portrait frontispiece in vol. I, a folding frontispiece of "Canterbury Pilgrims" in vol. II, and numerous illustrations. Original brown cloth, with elaborate gilt designs to front covers. Covers bright, with slight wear at corners. Both vols rebacked with part of original spine relaid, internally clean with slight dusting and darkening at page edges. First edition. Of special interest are the 3 electrotypes from the Virgil woodblocks and the 17 electrotypes from the original copperplates of the Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Gilchrist was Blake’s first full-scale biographer and the only biographer who actually met Blake. The work was unfinished when he died and largely completed by his wife, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti who wrote the final chapter from Gilchrist’s notes, with help from his brother William Michael, and also Swinburne whose own book on Blake was the result of his researches when reviewing Gilchrist’s book. Bentley, Blake Books 1680 A. (Item Id: 108954)
