Aphorisms on Man: Translated from the Original Manuscript.
London: J. Johnson, 1788. Small 8vo, vi, i (errata), 224 pp, with the frontispiece designed by Fuseli and engraved by Blake. Very Good in original drab paper-covered boards, slightly worn on paper spine and at one corner : a firm and clean copy with George Goyder's bookplate and a clean copy of the engraving in the first state. Scarce in boards in this condition. First edition, first state of the plate. The frontispiece is after a drawing by Fuseli (see Essick, Blake and His Contemporaries..., 43 for the original drawing) and is a powerful image. The text notes End of Vol. I but no further volumes appeared as a fire destroyed Lavaters manuscript at the printer. The Huntington Library has Blakes own copy, extensively annotated throughout. Bentley, BB, 480. Essick and Easson 2, XXXII, 1a. Essick, William Blakes Commercial Book Illustrations, XVIII.
