Private memorabilia album containing manuscript letters and notes by 40 19th century artists, mainly of the French Academic, Orientalist and Classical schools.

[c.1880s-1900s]. 4to, autograph notes and letters by 40 different artists, most accompanied by clipped photographic illustrations of the artist and his/her work, mounted on 37 stiff card leaves, half calf over pebbled cloth, upper boards stamped with the initials E.F., white moiré endpapers, front paste down with ticket of H. Maquet Fils, 19 Avenue de lOpera, Paris. Binding worn and lacking lower third of backstrip, portions of two illustrations clipped out, letters generally in very good to fine condition. A remarkable memorabilia album containing letters and notes by significant artists of the French Academic, Orientalist and Classical schools, collected between 1880 and 1906 by Emma Fagnani, wife of the Italian-American portrait painter Giuseppe Fagnani (1819-1875). A complete list of artists represented is available separately; present are 32 French artists, including Benjamin-Constant, Rosa Bonheur, Bouguereau, Cabanel, Dantan, Delaroche, Gustave Doré, Lefebvre, Lhermitte, Vibert and Ziem. The rest are American (Elizabeth Gardner), Polish-American (Henry Mosler), Austrian (Leopold Müller), Belgian (Alfred Stevens), English (William Wyld and Frederick Leighton), Italian (Castiglione), and Spanish (Madrazo).
