Central of Northern France, c. 16th century. Single leaf, 190 x 130 mm, 23 lines, ruled in red ink, hand painted miniature 57 mm x 48 mm, written in black ink in a large lettre batarde, rubrics in red, versal initials in liquid silver or gold on blue or red ground, 2- to 4-line initials in white on red or blue enclosing colored flowers on liquid gold panels. A very fine miniature from a luxurious Book of Hours; The Crucifixion from the Hours of the Cross, with the Virgin and St. John. The text on the verso shows it to be of the Use of Rome and of mixed use, incorporating the Hours of the Cross and the Holy Ghost into those of the Virgin.
