The Divine Comedy.
New York: Washington Square Press, 1966. Three vols., 8vo., [ix], ; [v], ; [v], , b&w illustrations throughout, Italian and English text on facing pages. Quarter white cloth, pictorial paper boards, title on gray label stamped in gilt to backstrip, with original glassine jackets, top edge red, housed in a red and brown paper slipcase which has a paper label neatly printed with the title in red. A lovely well preserved set which appears to have never been read, some slight toning to the glassine jackets, otherwise like new. First edition thus, translated into verse by Louis Biancolli, and illustrated by Harry Bennett. This set has a pleasing typeface that reads easily, and is enriched by the original Italian on facing pages. Each illustration is accompanied by the lines it represents. The contrasting black and white palette accentuates the textual themes of light and dark, good and evil. A fine set for any collector interested in the tradition of Dante translations, and inspired illustration.
