Pauls Church-Yard, MDCLXXXIII (1683). 4to., [6], 636, [17] pp., engraved frontisportrait, title printed in red and black. Rebacked mottled calf, marbled edges, raised bands with green label to backstrip stamped with title in gilt. Minor foxing most prevalent on endpapers and pastedowns, boards rubbed, corners bumped; otherwise a very good copy. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown “Pax In Bello, Leeds.” Second armorial bookplate to verso of title page, “The Hon. Sir Thomas Bury Knight of the Barons of her Majesties Court Exchequer 1703.” Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648) was an Anglo-Welsh soldier, diplomat, historian, poet and religious philosopher. Many of his works were published posthumously. Herbert was responsible for the first purely metaphysical treatise written by an Englishman, and is known as the father of English Deism. Wing II 1507A.
