New York: Reporter Publications Inc., 1947, 1954, 1956, Doric Publishing Co., 1960, 1967. Folios 11 1/4 x 14 1/2”, 148 pp., 136 pp., lii, 68 pp., [114] pp., 100 pp., all are profusely illustrated both in color on glossy paper and in b&w on matte paper, with inlaid fabric samples throughout. Pictorial card stock wrappers, all are slightly rubbed around the edges and have some minor chips to backstrips, inlaid fabric samples are complete, order forms, special offers, and pamphlets slipped in, a very good complete set of issues with original ephemera. First edition, first printing of issues number 4, 28, 38 (Museum of Modern Art Exhibition collectors issue), 51, and 74. American Fabrics magazine was a grand trade publication for the fabrics and textile industry. Each issue features cover art by a notable artist or art work, these five issues are a choice selection. Issue 4 features a cover with an inlaid Angel detail from “The Nativity,” a color aptitude test, and a “Lexicon of Specialty Fibers” with complete set of fabrics swatches and yarn samples in little envelopes. Issue 28 features a cover by Fernand Leger, “Les Plongeurs,” a detailed article on “Modern Finishes” with a vocabulary, and a history of the Cheney Brothers Silk Mills. Issue 38 is a collectors issue sponsoring jointly with the Museum of Modern Art’s “Textiles U.S.A.” Exhibition, featuring cover art for “Textiles U.S.A.” by George Tscherny, a fold-out blueprint of the museum layout with an exhibition guide, introductions to the exhibition by Arthur Drexler, and Dorothy Shaver, numerous fabric swatches from the exhibition including industrial fabrics with a discussion on industrial fabrics by Henry Dreyfuss. Issue 51 features a cover design by W. Lully which is an adaptation of an Adinkira cloth from Ghana, an 11 page photographic essay on the textiles of Ghana, and an 8 page article by Rene Fueloep-Miller on the symbolism of color with inlaid color photos. Issue 74 features a colorful cover design reflecting the current seasons fashions, by W. Lully, “Directions for the Coming Seasons” with swatches from Oscar de La Renta, psychedelic and animal prints, new colors and new knits, and a photo essay on traditions in men’s fashion.
