The Poetical Works of Philip Dormer Stanhope Earl of Chesterfield.

1927. London: Elkin Matthews & Marrot, 1927.

Small 4to., [viii], 9-46 pp. Original violet-blue paste-paper boards, paper backstrip label, unopened. Slightly rubbed at extremities of binding, label toned; internally very good.

§ First Edition thus; number 8 of 250 copies on Binda hand-made paper. "The original English text of the poems and epigrams with editorial notes from the Miscellaneous Works, Volume III, London 1778, with the addition of several poems from other sources" (Officina Bodoni Bib.) One of the earliest books printed at the Press in Montagnola, before the move to Verona. The dilettante verses of the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (better known for his cynical manual for worldly success "Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman") seem a curious choice for the press and presumably therein must lie a story. Officina Bodoni Bib. 20. Ransom, p. 371, #11. Item #108096
