Sir Alfred (James) Munnings (1878-1959) was an English painter, he left school at the age of 14 to study lithography in Norwich. After his apprenticeship he supported himself through freelance poster work and the occasional sales of paintings. The loss of sight in his right eye in 1898 did not deflect his determination. A visit to Lavenham Horse Fair sparked his lifelong fascination with painting horses. His work centers around horses, gypsy life, and the Suffolk countryside. He was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1944. Turner’s The Dictionary of Art, p. 312. (Item Id: 108040)
