Judgment And Mercy For Afflicted Souls; Or, Meditations, Soliloquies, And Prayers, By Francis Quarles. A New Edition; With A Biographical And Critical Introduction, By Reginalde Wolfe, Esq.
London: Printed For Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster Row, 1807. Sm. 8vo, 198 leaves, [i-iii] iv-lxiv 2-332 (=396p.). Title In black and red. Frontispiece. Old half black morocco, gilt top, browned as usual (see below). Edited by Dibdin under the pseudonym of Reginalde Wolfe, who was Kings/Queens Printer in Latin, Greek and Hebrew during 1547-53 and 1559-73. Munby gave Harvard University the copy that Dibdin gave to his wife, with the frontispiece in three states. That copy is described by Dibdin thus (Reminiscences, p.258, note): There is a copy of this work somewhere abroad, bound in green morocco, with a broad border of gold, which contains three impressions of Mr. Freemans engraving one, on india paper, before the letter; another, an early proof; the third, the ordinary impression. Jackson notes that it is On the whole
a reasonably accurate reprint, with modernized orthography, of the first authorized complete edition of this book, Wing Q101 and 102, with the omission of the proofs from the Fathers and other non-Biblical sources. The frontispiece, engraved by Freeman, is after the Marshall plate that originally appeared with Quarless Solomons Recantation, 1645, but was also issued with this work. Dibdin adds, The book was printed by Gosnell, upon miserable paper, having a black and red title-page; and is now so scarce, that I know not where a copy may be found. Windle & Pippin A7a.
