London: Emily Faithfull and co., Victoria Press (for the Employment of Women), Great Coram Street, W.C., 1861. Royal 8vo, viii, 349 pages. Original red cloth elaborately stamped in gilt, gilt edges, with Smith and Collings’ ticket (usually it is Westley’s or Leighton’s). Backstrip restored, recased with new endpapers but saving the binders’ ticket, internally a very good copy. First edition of the first book printed by Emily Faithfull, marking the opening of the Victoria Press whose books were printed and illustrated entirely by women. Several contributions by important writers including Tennyson and Thackeray; the illustrations are unattributed beyond “designed by a lady intimately connected with our work” (preface) but as Faithfull’s sister was an accomplished artist whose hand is very evident in the two other books of the Press (Te Deum and 38 Texts) one wonders if she must have had some part in the production of her sister’s first book. Beckwith 10. Fredeman, p. 147 et seq. Amazingly, not in McLean Victorian Book Design or Victorian Publishers’ Book-Bindings. Robin de Beaumont notes that this is the most elaborate of the three cloth bindings he was aware of -- there was also a de luxe leather binding (Item Id: 107004)
