Coloniae Agrippinae: Meucherius, 1705. Thick sm. 8vo, 943, 144 pp. Early blind-stamped vellum over thin wooden boards, clasps. Early ownership inscription and notes at front and back, dated 1713. An interesting collection of synonyms, epithets, poetical phrases, in Latin and German. According to Backer (Sommervogel) a revision, by Aler of an earlier work ascribed to "le p. Chastillon", with title: Synonymorum et epithetorvm thesavrvs ... Parisiis, MDCLII.--cf. A. de Backer, Bibl. de la Comp. de Jesus (Sommervogel) t. 1, 1890, col. 164-66. An English translation appeared in Cambridge in 1902 perhaps indicating a long tradition of usage and thus value. Aler (1656-1727) was a French Jesuit scholar and poet: Chalmers notes: “His principal works are: 1. “Tractatus de artibus humanis,” Treves, 1717, 4to. 2. “Philosophise | tripartite, pars 1. sive logica,” Cologne, 1710; “pars 2. sive physica,” 1715; “pars 3. seu anima et metaphysica,” 1724. 3. “Gradus ad Parnassum,” a book well known in all schools in Europe, and of which there have been a great number of editions. 4. Some Latin tragedies, as Joseph, Tobias, &c.” (Item Id: 106771)
