Amsterdam: Abraham Latham, n.d. [1688]. 4to, (viii), 378 pp. with engraved title and 52 emblematic plates. Modern quarter calf, marbled boards. Minor dampstaining to outer margin of first four and final 93 pages, outer margin of X3 repaired (with loss of about three letters of text), some inner marginal worming affecting text on about 6 pages. A solid copy with excellent impressions of the engravings. First published in 1624, this edition is a reprint of the second edition of 1636 with emblematic vignettes by Christoph Le Blon, Johannes Gelles, Albert van der Poel, Willem de Passe and Jan Swelinck after Adriaan van de Venne. As in de Venne’s earlier work, Jacob Cats’s Sinn’- en - Minne-beelden (1618), the naturalistic vignettes are particularly interesting for their depictions of contemporary Dutch life including domestic interiors, formal gardens, costumes and tools.
