London: Harrap, 1932. 8vo. 48pp. With 4 color plates and 15 black and white illustrations. Original full limp vellum, titles and decoration to upper board gilt, top edge gilt, housed in a paper slipcase with printed label. A fine copy. Limited to 570 numbered copies signed by Rackham. Rackham’s critical reputation waxes and wanes over the decades like that of many, perhaps most, artists, but the undying appeal of his book illustrations for generation after generation of wide-eyed children remains constant. His Alice and Peter Pan are immortal, his ghosts and goblins inimitable, his trees and landscapes uniquely imaginative in ways that people of any age can respond to. His art utterly defines an era of children’s book illustration in the way that Cruikshank and Greenaway did in their eras or Sendak did in ours. (Item Id: 106403)
