Paris: Thierry, Barbin and Trebouillet, 1682. Sm. 8vo, 312pp. With an engraved frontispiece and two engraved plates by Sauvé after Brissart. Original marbled wrappers. Brown cloth box. First edition of vol. 8 of the posthumous works, containing three plays: first editions second issue of “Les Amans Magnifiques” and “La Comtesse d’Escarbagnes”, and the second issue of “Le Malade Imaginaire” with the added stage directions (not in the first issue) in italics. 17th-century editions of Molière are very uncommon, and uncut in the original wrappers a genuine rarity. “Le Malade Imaginaire” is one of the most famous of Molière’s plays and is still performed today. No copy located for sale as of July 2014, no copy at auction. This copy was last sold by Lucien Goldschmidt and has his description, citing these references: Rothschild II, 73-74.
