Almayers Folly: a Story of an Eastern River.
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1895. 8vo, 272pp. Original green cloth, gilt-stamped on backstrip, top edge gilt. Covers a bit rubbed and stained, corners worn, approx. 26 pp. show small repairs to inside edge not affecting text block. Quarter dark green morocco slipcase. First edition, first issue, of Conrads first book. A significant association copy commemorating the literary and personal relationship of Joseph Conrad and Edward Garnett. By urging T. Fisher Unwin to publish Conrads first book, Almayers Folly, Garnett had launched Conrads career and the two subsequently became close friends. This copy marks the beginning of that friendship although interestingly Garnett inscribed it E libris Edward Garnett and gave it to Dr. Arthur Maude who also signed in pencil. Pasted in the front is the final page of a letter in Conrads hand in pencil. A few pencil notes in the text could be Garnett or more likely by Maude. We recently had Garnetts copy of Tales of Unrest, from a different collection. Wise, Ashley Library, Vol. 1, p. 231.
