London: Macmillan and Co., 1883. 8vo, 214, 1 (ads, undated) pp. Original green cloth gilt, backstrip a little dulled, light wear to tips but overall very good. Neat gift inscription dated 1888 on half title. First edition of this delightfully quirky book of verse, far less well known that Carroll’s other books. Much of the material had appeared earlier including Phantasmagoria and The Hunting of the Snark, however the Frost illustrations and about half a dozen of Carroll’s poems appear here for the first time. Among the unfamiliar gems is “Hiawatha’s Photographing”, a sad tale of Hiawatha’s travails as a Victorian portrait photographer told in Longfellow’s running metre, first published in the magazine Train around 1857 but appearing here for the first time in a book. Carroll was even more clever than usual with his dedicatory verse: the “dear child’s” name, Gertrude Chataway, is doubly hidden -- in the first letter of each line and the first word of each stanza.
