Full contemporary polished calf, roll-tolled in gilt, five raised bands with tile, volume number, authors name and decorations stamped to panels in gilt, gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. With some scattered foxing, and shelfwear as would be expected for a set such as this, otherwise very good. First edition of this complete set of the Works of the English poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744), bound in a contemporary supple calf that has aged to a glossy amber hue. Scattered appropriately throughout in the set are numerous engraved portraits of Popes noble friends, family and acquaintances. Also included are several portraits of Pope himself; famed champion of the heroic couplet, and well known for his translation of Homer, as well as his satirical verses such as The Rape of the Lock.
