Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1859. 8vo, [i-vi], [7]-215 pp. with 16 pp. publisher's catalogue at back dated November, 1858. Original blind-stamped publisher’s cloth, brown coated endpapers, cloth rubbed and worn at corners, crown of backstrip chipped, unobtrusive stain on front fly and title page. Signature of Henry Hobart Taylor in pencil on front fly. First edition, fourth printing, with title page dated M DCCC LIX, p. 119 last line: “Born of heavenward aspiration,” and p.124, line 3: “The revel of the ruddy wine,” (BAL 12122). Longfellow claimed that his tragi-comic ballad of a Pilgrim love triangle was inspired by true events; he was himself descended from the Plymouth Pilgrims, including the real-life namesakes of his poem’s protagonists. This copy likely belonged to Henry Hobart Taylor (1834-1875) prominent Chicago businessman and father of the novelist Hobart Chatfield-Taylor. (Item Id: 105457)
