Le Morte Darthur. The Original Edition of William Caxton Now Reprinted and Edited with an Introduction and Glossary By H. Oskar Sommer, Ph.D. With an Essay on Malorys prose style by Andrew Lang.
London: David Nutt, 1889. 3 vols. in 2, very thick large 8vo, x, (6), 861, (3); ix, 230, (2); xxv, 338pp. With folding charts in the text. Half brown brown morocco lettered in gilt, gilt tops, untrimmed, a very good set with vol. 2 bound to style. Bookplate of William Dudley Oliver. Vol. 1 contains the facsimile of Caxton's edition; vol. 2 Sommer's notes, glossary and bibliography of the Morte d'arthur; vol. 3 contains Lang's essay and Sommer's notes on sources. Scholarhip dated but still of importance, the facsimile attractively presented. One of the rarest books in English literature, Caxtons Malory exists in one known complete copy, and one incomplete. As it is in the Grolier English 100, only one library in the world has a complete set (the Morgan Library, NY). Not a very rare edition, but pleasantly produced.
