Captain Pope, then serving with the Corps of Topographical Engineers, led an expedition that roamed the unsettled western part of Minnesota Territory from June 6 to September 27, 1849. His report emphasizes the possibilities for settlement in the Red River Valley and calls for quick settlement of any claims by the three Native American tribes--Sioux, Winnebago, and Chippewa--then resident there. The fine, beautifully detailed map, measuring 560 x 675 mm, was the last mapping prior to statehood. Howes P479, Sabin 64117.
