Original quarter brown cloth with beige paper-covered boards, paper label stamped in brown affixed to backstrip, top edge gilt; frontispiece in color, and 78 illustrations (many of which are separate plates outside of the pagination) from paintings, drawings and photographs in black and white. Two bookplates affixed to front pastedown, some rubbing and staining to boards, bumping to corners, some offsetting from frontispiece onto title page, edges browned. Very good. First trade edition, second printing. A thoroughly illustrated jaunt through various aspects of the history of the book, with sections on Dr. Samuel Johnson, sporting books, and colored-plate books, in addition to a number of opinion pieces.
