London: Macmillan, 1880. Vol. 2 only, 8vo, ix, 383 pp., with a portrait frontispiece and numerous illustrations. Original blue cloth with elaborate gilt-stamped designs. Backstrip worn, cracked and partially detached with some loss at foot and crown. Second and best edition. Of special interest are the 17 prints from electrotypes made from the original copperplates of the Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Gilchrist was Blake’s first full-scale biographer and the only biographer who actually met Blake. The work was unfinished when he died and largely completed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti who wrote the final chapter from Gilchrist’s notes, with help from his brother William Michael, and also Swinburne whose own book on Blake was the result of his researches when reviewing Gilchrist’s book. Bentley, Blake Books, 1680B. (Item Id: 100193)
