A Leaf from the First Edition of the First Complete Bible in English, The Coverdale Bible, 1535; With an Historical Introduction by Allen P. Wikgren, and A Census of Copies Recorded...

1974. San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1974.

Folio, 45 pp., illustrated throughout including a sepia portrait of Coverdale and a folding facsimile of the original map; and with an original leaf tipped in. A very good copy.

§ Limited to 425 copies including a number of “special” copies, thus one of about 400. The leaf is from Daniel chapters 7-9, describing Daniel's visions: Daniel 7 tells of Daniel's vision of four world-kingdoms replaced by the kingdom of the saints or "holy ones" of the Most High, which will endure for ever. Four beasts come out of the sea, the Ancient of Days sits in judgment over them, and "one like a son of man" is given eternal kingship. Daniel 8 is the eighth chapter of the Book of Daniel. It tells of Daniel's vision of a two-horned ram destroyed by a one-horned goat, followed by the history of the "little horn", which is Daniel's code-word for the Greek king Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Only the first part of Daniel 9 is present.
