§ A very uncommon edition of Ramsay's influential pastoral play, the first Scottish opera, with just four copies recorded on Worldcat. Allan Ramsay (1684-1758) was a poet of the Scottish Enlightenment and an important figure in the preservation of ancient Scottish verse and song. The Gentle Shepherd, first published in 1725, was hugely successful in his lifetime and was performed as a ballad opera for many years after his death. Item #124607
