The collection includes the first book appearances of the novella "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe," and six short stories previously published in periodicals: "Wunderkind" (1936), "The Jockey" (1941), "Madame Zilensky and the King of Finland" (1941), "The Sojourner" (1950), "A Domestic Dilemma" (1951), and "A Tree, a Rock, a Cloud" (1942), as well as all McCullers other previous novels: her acclaimed first novel "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" (1940), "Reflections in a Golden Eye" (1941) and "The Member of the Wedding" (1946).
