§ A fine sketch of a famous view, perhaps one of the most desirable depictions of the Golden Gate. Burgess (1831-1905) traveled to California in 1849 to join the Gold Rush. He traveled extensively through the region, chronicling his experiences through watercolor paintings. Although he made a living as a portrait artist, he remains best known for his paintings of the Gold Rush.
