More Tramps Abroad.

1897. London: Chatto & Windus, 1897.

8vo, (viii), 486, (2), 32 (ads dated September 1897) pp. Original ribbed maroon cloth with blind-stamped decoration, lettered in gilt on upper board and backstrip, top edge gilt, others uncut, floral printed endpapers. Cloth lightly rubbed, uncut edges foxed, a little musty. A solid, unsophisticated copy with pencil name on half title.

§ First English edition (published in the U.S. as "Following the Equator"). "There is a possibility that this London edition was issued a few days prior to the American edition but the record is not clear" BAL 3453. Twain embarked on a round-the-world lecture tour at the age of 60 after a failed investment brought him close to bankruptcy. This is an account of that journey, his inimitable rambunctious social commentary strongly critiquing the racism and imperialism he encountered, mixed with a little fiction. Item #122862
