1924. London: Methuen and Co., 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928.
8vo, 4 vols., x, 100 pp.; xi, 158 pp.; x, 103 pp.; xi, 178 pp. In original blue, green, red, and rose cloth, covers stamped and panelled in gilt, backstrips gilt lettered, top edges gilt. A few trivial closed tears and spotting to DJ of WWWVY, the others jackets are almost pristine with just the slightest of age-toning. Each volume enclosed in a modern, custom slipcase.
§ First editions, all four books signed or inscribed by both Milne and Shepard. A truly remarkable set. When We Were Very Young in rare first state (blank endpapers, p.ix unnumbered) with an original ink drawing by Shepard reinterpreting his illustration on p.48. and with manuscript poem inscriptions by both men on the free endpaper. The other 3 vols. are signed on the title-page by both Milne and Shepard. Both manuscript poems are written for Jennie Bates and two other volumes have additional gift inscriptions from "Uncle George" to "Jennie" making it highly probable that this set was assembled as the books were published.
