The Botanic Garden.

London: J.Johnson, 1799. 2 vols. 8vo, vol 1: xx, 492, plus frontispiece and 9 plates: vol 2: xvi, 282, ii(additional note relating to p.433 of vol 1), plus frontispiece and 9 plates (one double). Contains all 5 Blake engraved plates as called for in this 4th edition, but lacks the diagram "Section of a Coal Mine" plate at p.375 of vol 1. Very attractive set in pale green calf with gilt decorations and red labels to spines; modest wear to covers, and offsetting from plates as usual. Pamela Lister's copy with her bookplate. Fourth edition of Darwin's enormously popular verse ode to scientific discovery and Linnean plant taxonomy, the first in octavo and the first with the reduced re-engraved plates, five of which were by Blake, one after Fuseli ('The Fertilization of Egypt’), but strangely omitting ‘Tornado’ which had appeared in the third edition only. See Bentley 450, Essick, William Blake’s Commercial Book Engravings, XXI. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, II, p.88. Item #108754
