Folio, , v, 216,  pp., with a color frontisportrait and facsimiles of two letters on three pages, and 42 photogravure plates many with brown or peach printed borders, all with original captioned tissue guards, chapter initials are all printed in peach, title page printed in black and red. Contemporary half red morocco with gilt rules, and red cloth boards. Backstrip with five raised bands stamped and lettered in gilt, top-edge gilt. Minor foxing throughout, some light stains and bumping to boards; very good. With the bookplate of C. O. Kleinsmith to upper pastedown.

Samuel Rawson Gardiner’s illustrated biography of Cromwell, who led parliamentary forces in the English Civil War, helped depose and execute Charles I, and served as lord protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1653 until his death in 1658. Gardiner (1892-1902) was an English historian, teacher at Oxford, and popular lecturer. His major work was Constitutional Documents of the Puritan Revolution, and he was also prolific in the ninth edition of Encyclopaedia Briannica.
